A phobia is a fear of something that may have little or no actual threat or danger. When the fear becomes irrational and can affect certain parts of life activities they are then described as phobias. 

Often people experiencing phobias are aware of the irrational thoughts but are unable to control their fear or anxiety. Phobias may have developed during childhood years or during adulthood.
